Grade seven exam papers stolen in Kawambwa

Grade seven pupils at Mushentenke basic school in Kawambwa might not write their final examinations that start tomorrow.

This is because unknown people last night broke into the
headmaster’s office and went away with a trunk containing all
examinations papers for 2009 grade seven exams.

The trunk was later dumped 50 metres in the bush from the
headmaster’s office but eight of the nine packs inside it had been
tampered with.

Luapula province police commanding officer Auxensio Mbewe confirmed the development to ZANIS today.

Mr Mbewe said unknown people broke the door to the headmaster’s
office at Mushentenke basic last night and took away a trunk containing
nine packs of examination papers for different subjects.

He said later today the police recovered the trunk from the bush, 50 metres from the headmaster’s office.

He said the trunk was opened and o eight out of nine packs of examinations papers were tampered with.

The commanding officer said the trunk of the tampered examination
papers has since been transported to the district education board
secretary’s office, waiting for a decision from the Examination Council
of Zambia (ECZ).

Grade seven pupils across the country are supposed to start writing their grade 8 qualifying examinations tomorrow.

China begins mass vaccinations for swine flu

BEIJING — China kicked off mass vaccinations for swine flu Monday in
Beijing, making it apparently the first nation in the world to start
innoculating its population against the virus.

The Asian giant
has been at the forefront of international efforts to produce an
A(H1N1) influenza vaccine, with at least five companies receiving
government approval for the work. Officials however have warned demand
will exceed supply.

The capital's municipal health bureau
announced Monday in a statement on its website that Beijing "took the
lead in China in starting A(H1N1) flu vaccinations".

Authorities
kicked off the programme by immunising students due to take part in
next week's National Day celebrations, the statement said. Around
100,000 students are due to attend, according to recent state media
reports.

"We believe that China is the first country in the world
to start mass vaccinations for A(H1N1) flu," Vivian Tan, spokeswoman
for the World Health Organisation in China, told AFP.

The health
ministry has said it plans to vaccinate 65 million people, or five
percent of the country's total population of 1.3 billion, before year's
end.

A total of 500 medical workers in nearly 50 teams have been
mobilised to go to schools across Beijing to give the students their
shots, which are free and voluntary, the health bureau reported.

Apart
from students taking part in festivities marking the 60th anniversary
of the founding of communist China on Octob...

British Media, lawyers predict guilty for FTJ

The Guardian newspaper of UK (www.guardian.co.uk) has written an
article predicting that former president Fredrick Chiluba will be found
guilty and sentenced to jail in tomorrow.

The story is republished below:

Aformer president of Zambia faces jail tomorrow after an
unprecedented criminal trial that should send a shiver down the spines
of once untouchable autocrats in Africa.

A verdict is expected in the case against Frederick Chiluba, accused
of “plundering the national economy” during his decade-long rule in the
southern African state. He has already lost a civil court case that
found he laundered around $50m (£30m) from his impoverished people to
help fund lavish spending on designer clothes and shoes.

If, as expected, he is found guilty in Lusaka tomorrow on a criminal
charge of stealing $500,000, Chiluba could face at least five years in
jail. Legal experts believe the trial is the first of its kind in which
an African leader has been prosecuted for corruption in his own
country, and could set a precedent for bringing other so-called “big
men” to justice.

“Today’s dictator could be tomorrow’s defendant,” said Michael

Catholic woman condemned for supporting porn

National Moral Advocacy (NMA) has
expressed concern over people that are supporting the distribution of
pornographic matter in the country.

According to ZANIS, NMA president Alex Mubanga said it is very
shameful for women to be in the fore front supporting the distribution
of the pornographic matter in question when the person in the picture
is a woman.

Mr Mubanga further charged that catholic women supporting the
distribution of the material were a disgrace to the Catholic Church.

“That Mrs Edina Musadabwe in a Catholic attire is a shame to the
church, if the woman in the picture was her daughter would she feel
good that every person is seeing her daughter private parts?” he
questioned.

Mr Mubanga further observed that genuine concerned people were
worried with the p-ace at which people in the country were being
exposed to evils of society.

He said it was a shame that some political parties were even
planning to send cadres to state house to march in support of post
editor Chansa Kabwela.

He further said even the church which is supposed to lead in guidance was too quite over the matter.

“Its sad that even the church has decided to keep quite on the
matter, they are supposed show guidance, even in America which is very
liberal its only the husband of the woman giving birth who is present
at birth time and not any man,” he said.

Why Africa’s list of thieving leaders is long

The list of corrupt African leaders in modern history is a long one.

Idi Amin of Uganda, Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire, Robert Mugabe of
Zimbabwe, Frederick Chiluba of Zambia, Sani Abacha of Nigeria — to name
just a few — pilfered their countries and/or brutalized their people to
a flabbergasting degree.

Why so many? It’s a question that’s rarely asked. While the
reticence might be attributed to fear of being labeled a racist, in
fact it’s the silence itself that reeks of racism. After all, doesn’t
the sustained quiet speak of lowered expectations of these rulers?
Michela Wrong’s new book, It’s Our Turn To Eat: The Story of a Kenyan
Whistleblower, confronts the question of African corruption head on and
finds there’s plenty of blame to go around.

In early 2003, Wrong’s friend John Githongo was tapped by incoming
President Mwai Kibaki to be Kenya’s new anti-corruption chief. Kibaki
had been swept into office on a platform of fighting graft, and his
appointment of Githongo, a former journalist and Transparency
International worker, was supposed to indicate that he meant business.
Reeling from the scandals of the Daniel arap Moi regime, Kenyans had
finally had enough of the rampant corruption that permeated virtually
every aspect of their lives — a 2001 survey found that the average
city-dwelling Kenyan shelled out 16 bribes per month.

Githongo excelled at his job; corruption decreased during his years
as czar. Two years after his appointment, however, Githon...

Zambia, ABSA US$100m scam– who is involved?

On 15th August 2003, a motion to impeach President Levy
Patrick Mwanawasa SC was moved in the National Assembly by UPND Chief
Whip, Crispin Sibeta.

Sibeta laid impeachment charges that accused Mwanawasa of corruption, nepotism and breaches of the Constitution.

Rooted in the twelve allegations and twenty five counts, was one
corrupt allegation that President Mwanawasa received kickbacks from an
oil firm and importer of crude oil, Trans Saharan Trading (TST).

MMD Vice- President and Kapompo West Member of Parliament Enoch
Kavindele laid 32 documents on the table in Parliament supporting an
Opposition impeachment motion against his former boss and MMD
President, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa. Many thought Kavindele was suffering
from a poor taste of sour grapes. He was fired three months before this
motion as Republican Vice-President by Mwanawasa.

Mwanawasa accused Kavindele of practising corruption.

Among the documents Kavindele laid on the table were two books written by Simon Zukas and Andrew Sardanis entitled ‘’Into Exile and Back’’ and ‘’Africa- Another Side of the Coin’’.

Kavindele stated that the 32 documents he had laid on the table of
Parliament were to show that Mwanawasa was inherently corrupt and that
some of his nefarious activities could be traced to his time when he
was practising as a lawyer, his tenure as Republican Vice-President
under President Frederick Chiluba and his presidency si...
